How do taxes work if you consult for a business that is out of state?

30 April 2009 2 Comments

Hello all,

I am currently an independent consultant for a company based in Massachusetts. However, I do ALL of the work remotely in California. The employer did withhold anything. Do I still have to pay MA state income tax, or do I only pay California state taxes?

Thanks in advance!

Taxes to place where you pay taxes to place where you pay taxes to place where you pay taxes to place where your client is located.
Taxes to place where you pay taxes to place where you work or live it does not matter where your client is located.

Federal and CA only. MA has no claim on your income as you neither live nor worked there.
